Marius Tănăsescu

Marius Tănăsescu (b. 1972) is a Romanian visual artist, art historian, and critic who lives and works between Bucharest and Montreal. His practice unfolds at the intersection of visual experimentation and philosophical inquiry, engaging with themes such as the nature of the image, representation, and the shifting boundaries between human and non-human perspectives.
Working across video, photography, drawing, and mixed media, Tănăsescu often reinterprets canonical works and genres from art history—such as vanitas—through conceptual displacement and irony. His projects have been presented in exhibitions in Romania and internationally, including Bucharest, Montreal, and Venice, and reflect a sustained interest in revisiting major cultural references through contemporary visual language.

Alongside his artistic activity, he has developed a career in the field of contemporary art as a writer, editor, and curator. He has contributed to international publications such as Flash Art (Milan), coordinated the Prague Biennale 3, and curated programs and exhibitions in independent art spaces.
