Vimana gallery is pleased to announce Persistent disturbing preoccupations, David Leonid Olteanu’s exhibition taking over the entirety of gallery space, showcasing paintings most of which never displayed, and revealing the skills of an artist extending over his former boundaries.
Born in 1968 in Craiova, David Leonid Olteanu studied ceramics, glass, and metal at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, and is a member of the Union of Visual Artists of Romania (UAP). He holds a position as assistant lecturer at the National University of the Arts Bucharest in the ceramics-glass-metal department.
His practice is characterized by a distinctive material logic: his relationship with ceramics is bivalent — he has reservations about the conditions imposed by the material and the technologies that determine the final form, while simultaneously being drawn to experiments with the chemical composition of substances, particularly those related to combustion. The inability to fully control what happens during firing keeps him perpetually investigating. It is not the experiment that occupies the primary place, nor craft, but ideas, specifically the morphological ideas underlying his projects.
Art critic Mihai Plămădeală has described his approach as syncretic rather than strictly interdisciplinary: his heterogeneous assemblages engage through form and materiality, texture, volume, density, color, opacity, reflection, transparency. His work begins from concise forms, recontextualizing them while maintaining a considered distance from minimalism.
He has exhibited in Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, and Moldova, and was selected by unanimous vote of the scientific committee for the 2018 Biennale delle Nazioni in Venice.
